Toronto Club Review - My Quick Rundown, So Many Clubs!
Here's a quick review of most of the Toronto clubs I've been to. There are a TON of smaller venues I've been to, but I can't remember all their names off the top of my head. Give them a chance though - I usually have a good time at them. Please note that clubs change names so often, especially in the Richmond clubbing district, so this list will be dated quick fast :)
Geez. Looking at the list, I can't believe I've been to so many night clubs.
Circa - Big, flashy club. Lots of rooms, expensive, but surprisingly not pretentious for the times I went. Nicely decorated and worth checking out at least once or twice.
Ultra Supper Club - Nice interior, good dance space, crowd is generally older, and it can have a long line during pretentious celebrity nights, which I don't feel is worth lining up for.
C Lounge - In the summer, they have their outdoor signature pool. In the winter, you can hang outside with provided faux fur coats. The outside area is good for mingling. Inside, there's a limited dance floor, good music. The crowd varies and the bouncers are nice. Popular with East Indians - I wish they would play more Bollywood given that. My one gripe with C Lounge (and many clubs suffer from this too) is the bartenders won't give you a glass of water if you're thirsty - you have to buy a bottle for $4-$5.
Metro - I've had good times here. Update: closed now.
Hyde - lots of house music, good atmosphere. Limited dance floor.
Century Room - I've had good Thursday nights here.
Toika - I only go here on weekday house nights to practice house dancing, but it looks like a good small venue to chill.
Biermarkt (Portland) - No real dancing area other than in front of the band, but that's where I owned it :)
Biermarkt (Esplanade) - Lots of mingling areas. Live music transitions into 90's tunes. I'm not a fan of the music, but the crowd is pleasant.
Place Across From Biermarkt - I don't know what it's called, but it's new and there's live jazz music and a teenie chill friendly dance floor.
Pravda - Loud music but no real dance floor. Good place to mingle when there are people there. Sometimes empty. Sometimes packed. Amusing Russian/communist theme.
Guvernment - Biggest and most well known club in Toronto. It's survived time and is really loud, the hip hop room is OK, but I generally don't go here. I find the older than middle-aged Vietnamese regular group hilarious.
Footwork -I've only been there on heavy techno nights, so it seemed like a mini-Guvernment, but I've been told their other theme nights (funk/soul) can be really fun.
Devil's Martini - I've been to this place a LOT, so I have plenty of good experiences and plenty of bad experiences (one bad bouncer). Nice, large dance floor and popular with bachelorettes. Check it out on Saturdays.
Level - Big club with big club music. Didn't have a particularly interesting time there. Kind of empty.
Suite 106 And Wet Bar - only went there on a Latin themed night, but I liked the dance floor and the Australian girl I met there
Crocodile Rock - Well known for cougars on the hunt for young cubs. lol
Brant House - Older crowd. Sometimes there's an unbearable line, but that's because it's genuinely packed. More mingling, less dancing.
Muzik - Been there a few times, but I totally forgot what it's like. Kind of out of the way, but I faintly remember a decent dance floor.
Embassy/Fluid - Big clubs. Don't really remember my experiences there. I vaguely remember Fluid being all right, but I think it was because I went there with a girl I liked.
Frequency - only went there on a Serbian night, so I can't really review it. Big club, lots of rooms, and the Serbian girls were smoking hot.
Tryst - Loud club with young crowd. Too loud actually if you're in the middle of the dance floor. But good crowd, people are dancing, and it's not empty.
London Tap House (used to be Afterlife) - Much better and less shady now that the Afterlife crowd is gone along with metal detectors. Still looks the same on the inside. The dance floor is packed, but the crowd is good, and it's not pretentious. Sometimes, I just dance on the quieter second floor.
Schmooze - Really nice looking club. Used to be really popular until the bouncers dismantled its reputatiion. Now it's more of an after-work hangout.
Tatoo Rock Parlour - High, high energy. Rock music. It's loud, but go at least once because it's a lot of fun. Make sure you jump on stage and do some air guitaring.
Savage Garden - Popular with the Goth crowd. Not sure if it's still open.
Big Bop - I've came here to watch King Sunshine and other local bands. Dancing to live music, especially funk, is fantastic.
Lee's Palace - I've only come here to watch live music and drum circles, so I can't review it as a club.
Alio - International crowds host random small parties here.
Memento - it still says Club V on the outside, but it's a Latin dance club (not salsa, but Latin club beats).
Mana Bar - I come here for the Brazilian nights mid-week. Brazilian funk and samba are great to dance to!
Maro - Kind of out of the way in Liberty Village. Older crowd. I've had good nights here.
Hideout - Long, small dance floor. House music. Everyone seems almost too chill. Dancing and standing area seem to mix so sometimes it's hard to get it on.
Easy On The Fifth - Older crowd here, and sometimes, MUCH older crowd. I'm not a fan of 90's music, but I like the dance floor. Kind of expensive.
Grace O Malley's - Casual crowd. Rock music mixed with live music. Long lineups but good vibe inside. Plus you can get food.
Piccadilly Circus - I used to come here on Thursdays where the drinks were dirt cheap and they gave you $5 to go in. Then I partied with the university crowd. Good times then. Not sure about now, though the crowd still seems baseball-cap young.
Place between Piccadilly's and Grace O Malley's - Looks new, but it was a sausage party the night I went.
Cantina Charlie's - College crowd. Wild. Fun. Get your grinding on.
Global Backpackers Inn - It's a hostel, but believe it or not, cheap drinks and fun international crowd in the summer! Limited impromput dancing inside.
Chinadoll - Small venue. Sometimes empty. I remember a really good hip hop night there once.
Octopus - Small venue with good music. Fun.
Cheval -A bit upscale. Long room so the dancing is awkward, but good crowd.
Spice Route - Not really for dancing but more for chilling. Nice interior. Maybe a decent place to bounce to?
Budo Bar - I forgot what it's like
System - I forgot what it's like or if it's still open even.
Andy Poolhall - I once went there on Lesbian night by accident.
Other than that, it's a really good pick. Small dancefloor but ecletic music ranging from Brit pop to house to hard hip hop.
Rivoli - party starts late here, but I've been to good funk parties here. There's a dance floor, but not a whole lot of dancing.
Horseshoe Tavern - Live music. I went on an cold, weekday night for kicks so I can't really review it. I've always regretted not showing up for an impromptu Death From Above 1979 performance here. Now they've broken up.
Supermarket - Good funk nights. Not really crowded. I hopped it in a multi-club session.
Toybox - house music. Very small crowd.
The ton of clubs and small venues on Queen West - it depends on the theme night. I think Toronto really shines when it comes to small venues though.
Salsa Clubs (El Rancho, Plaza Flamingo, Acrobat, Alleycatz, Lula Lounge, Six Degrees, Babaluu's, etc) ... I'll create a separate thread on these
